二、阅读理解(共3道试题,共60分。)
1.    Looking back on my childhood, I am convinced that naturalists are born and not made. Although we were brought up in the same way, my brothers and sisters soon abandoned their pressed (紧抱的) flowers and insects. Unlike them, I had no ear for music and languages. I was not an early reader and I could not do mental arithmetic.
Before World War I we spent our summer holidays in Hungary. I have only the dim memory of the house we lived in, of my room and my toys. Nor do I recall clearly the large family of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins who gathered next door. But I do have a crystal-clear memory of the dogs, the farm animals, the local birds and, above all, the insects.
I am a naturalist, not a scientist. I have a strong love of the natural world, and my enthusiasm has led me into varied investigations. I love discussing my favorite topics and enjoy burning the midnight oil while reading about other people’s observations and discoveries. Then something happens that brings these observations together in my conscious mind. Suddenly you fancy you see the answer to the riddle (谜), because it all seems to fit together. This has resulted in my publishing 300 papers and books, which some might honor with the title of scientific research.
But curiosity, a keen eye, a good memory and enjoyment of the animal and plant world do not make a scientist; one of the outstanding and essential qualities required is self-discipline, a quality I lack. A scientist, up to a point, can be made. A naturalist is born. If you can combine the two, you get the best of both worlds.

1).According to the author, a born naturalist should first of all be _____.
A. self-disciplined
B. full of enthusiasm
C. full of ambition
D. knowledgeable
满分:4分
2).The first paragraph tells us that the author _____.
A. was interested in flowers and insects in his childhood
B. lost his hearing when he was a child
C. didn’t like his brothers and sisters
D. was born to a naturalist’s family
满分:4分
3).The author says that he is a naturalist rather than a scientist probably because he thinks he _____.
A. just reads about other people’s observations and discoveries
B. comes up with solutions in most natural way
C. has a great deal of trouble doing mental arithmetic
D. lacks some of the qualities required of a scientist
满分:4分
4).The author can’t remember his relatives clearly because _____.
A. he was fully occupied with observing nature
B. he didn’t live very long with them
C. the family was extremely large
D. he was too young when he lived with them
满分:4分
5).Which of the following statements is true
A. The author believes that a born naturalist cannot be a scientist.
B. The author’s brothers and sisters were good at music and languages.
C. The author read a lot of books about the natural world and the oil industry.

2.    Too often young people get themselves employed quite by accident, not knowing what lies in the way of opportunity for promotion, happiness and security. As a result, they are employed doing jobs that afford them little or no satisfaction. Our school leavers face so much competition that they seldom care what they do as long as they can earn a living. Some stay long at a job and learn to like it; others quit from one to another looking for something to suit them. The young graduates who leave the university look for jobs that offer a salary up to their expectation.
Very few go out into the world knowing exactly what they want and realizing their own abilities. The reason behind all this confusion is that there never has been a proper vocational guidance in our educational institution. Nearly all grope (摸索) in the dark and their chief concern when they look for a job is to ask what salary is like. They never bother to think whether they are suited for the job or, even more important, whether the job suits them. Having a job is more than merely providing yourself and your dependants with daily bread and some money for leisure and entertainment. It sets a pattern of life and, in many ways, determines social status in life, selection of friends, leisure and interest.
n choosing a career you should first consider the type of work which will suit your interest. Nothing is more pathetic than taking on a job in which you have no interest, for it will not only discourage your desire to succeed in life but also ruin your talents and ultimately make you an emotional wreck (受到严重伤害的人) and a bitter person.

1).The reason why some people are unlikely to succeed in life is that they
A. have ruined their talents
B. have taken on an unsuitable job
