I. Read the following paragraphs and choose an adequate topic sentence for each of them. Write the number of your choices on the Answer Sheet. (10 points)
Paragraph 1
The modern age is an age of electricity. People are so used to electric lights, radio, televisions, and telephones that it is hard to imagine what life would be like without them. Yet, people began to understand how electricity works only a little more than two centuries ago. Scientists are discovering that the living world may hold many interesting secrets of electricity that could benefit humanity.
All living cells send out tiny pulses of electricity. As the heart beats, it sends out pulses of record; they form an electrocardiogram (心电图), which a doctor can study to determine how well the heart is working. The brain, too, sends out brain waves of electricity, which can be recorded in an electroencephalogram. The electric eel is an amazing storage battery. It can send a jolt of as much as eight hundred volts of electricity through the water in which it live. As many as four-fifths of all the cells in the electric eel’s body are specialized for generating electricity, and the strength of the shock it can deliver corresponds roughly to length of its body.
The modern age is an age of electricity.
Scientists are discovering how heart and brain work.
Scientists are discovering interesting secrets of electricity in the living world.
How living cells send out electricity enable doctors to understand the health conditions of the heart.
Paragraph 2
There are many theories about the beginning of drama in ancient Greece. The one most widely accepted today is based on the assumption (假定) that drama evolved (演化) from ritual. The argument for this view goes as follows. In the beginning, human beings viewed the natural forces of the world—even the seasonal changes—as unpredictable, and they sought through various means to control these unknown and feared powers. Those measures which appeared to bring the desired results were then kept and repeated until they became fixed rituals. Eventually stories arose which explained the mysteries of the rites. As time passed some rituals were abandoned, but the stories, later called myths, provided material for art and drama.
How the most popular theory explains the beginning of drama in ancient Greece.
Ancient Greek enjoyed a lot of mysterious stories.
Ancient Greeks found many measures to control the unknown world.
Rituals are very important for ancient Greeks.
II. Read the following paragraphs to identify the sentence which is not related to its topic. Write the number of the unrelated sentences on the Answer Sheet. (10 points)
Paragraph 1
Americans, like many people elsewhere in the world, like to invite friends to their homes for an evening of food, drink and conversation. (1) Formal dinners in fine homes and hotels in the US are much the same as formal dinners anywhere in the world. But as most people in the US have no servants, their dinner parties at home tend to be informal. Guests may sit down at a table, or, as many new small homes have no separate dining room or very small dining space, guests can also serve themselves and eat in the living room, holding their plates or trays on their knees. (2) Americans’ hospitality is best shown in the food they prepare for their guests. (3) A more enjoyable form of entertainment is the picnic. Americans are great picnickers and almost every family has a picnic basket. Summer invitations are often for a picnic at a park or in the open countryside. (4) Unless hamburgers or hot dogs are cooked over a fire, picnic food is usually cold.
Paragraph 2
The sentences in most well-written paragraphs may be analyzed into the following general functions. First, there are paragraph introducers, which are sentences that establish the topic focus of the paragraph as a whole. (1) Second, there are paragraph developers, which present examples or details of various kinds that support the ideas set forth by the paragraph introducers. (2) The quality of paragraph introducers often determines the length of a passage. (3) Third, there are viewpoint or context modulators, which are sentences that provide a smooth transition between different sets of ideas. Fourth, there are paragraph terminators, which logically conclude the ideas discussed in the paragraph in a psychologically satisfying manner. (4) Not all pieces of writing will conform to this analysis; however, most successful paragraphs usually contain some combination.
III. Put the following group of sentences into correct order. Write the number of the reordered sentences on the Answer Sheet. (10 points)
Every semester we have the opportunity to evaluate our instructors, to judge their lectures, their interest in students' problems, methods of assigning work, and general ability to conduct a class. It is very difficult to evaluate their performance objectively.
Another irresponsible form of evaluation occurred when James rated his instructor excellent because the instructor is "easy", who gives few tests and only assigns one paper during the entire term.
Both Senta and Sam were not fairly evaluating the instructor. They were affected by the grades they were earning and were biased in their judgments.
Her friend Sam wrote a great description of the same instructor because he received an A in the course.
For example, Senta recently wrote irresponsible remarks about her instructor because she was failing to pass the course.
On the other hand, James rated Professor Jones poor because he assigns text work daily, gives pre-test and post-test reviews, and packs his lectures with a lot of information.
IV. Composition writing (70 points)
Why reading should be a lifelong passion?
Write a composition of about 150 words to discuss the issue. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
