15秋学期《大学英语(三)》在线作业3
试卷总分:100   测试时间:--
一、阅读理解(共4道试题,共40分。)
1.Believe it or not, optical illusion (错觉)can cut highway crashes.
Japan is a case in point. It has reduced automobile crashes on some roads by nearly 75 percent using a simple optical illusion. Bent stripes, called chevrons (人字形), painted on the roads make drivers think that they are driving faster than they really are, and thus drivers slow down.
Now the American Automobile Association Foundation for Traffic Safety in Washington D.C. is planning to repeat Japan’s success. Starting next year, the foundation will paint chevrons and other patterns of stripes on selected roads around the country to test how well the patterns reduce highway crashes.
Excessive speed plays a major role in as much as one fifth of all fatal traffic accidents, according to the foundation. To help reduce those accidents, the foundation will conduct its tests in areas where speed-related hazards are the greatest---curves, exit slopes, traffic circles, and bridges.
Some studies suggest that straight, horizontal bars painted across roads can initially cut the average speed of drivers in half. However, traffic often returns to full speed within months as drivers become used to seeing the painted bars.
Chevrons, scientists say, not only give drivers the impression that they are driving faster than they really are but also make a lane appear to be narrower. The result is a longer lasting reduction in highway speed and the number of traffic accidents.

A. a new way of highway speed control
B. a new pattern for painting highways

C. a new approach to training drivers

2.The treatment of a British student has caused a major political and media storm in Britain. The student, Laura Spence, won a scholarship to Harvard but was rejected by Oxford University. The whole of Britain has been drawn into debate, with people urging universities to “open their doors to people from all parts of society.”
On the surface, the fuss is about discrimination (歧视) in British society. The British media has created a fierce controversy over Oxford’s admission procedures. International press comments have been more cynical, claiming that the Laura Spence story is indicative (预示的) of the typical British problem of class and arrogance — a reminder that a backward-looking Britain is still alive and well.
I think all of these comments, however valid, miss the larger picture. Like so many other parts of our lives these days, education has become a global enterprise. The brain drain is a universal phenomenon, and countries that don’t face up to the new reality will be losing some of their most precious resources. There is a growing trend of British students’ taking degrees in American universities. This year the number will break the psychological barrier of 1,000 students for the first time.
Today’s students have a very different view on education from their parents’. Because of television, the Internet and their own travels, these students see the world as a much smaller place than their parents once did. They are more confident in accepting the challenge of moving from one country to another, from one culture to another. In the context of student globe-trotters (环球旅行者), as world-class British universities like Oxford suddenly find themselves fighting over British students with the Harvards of the world, they face major challenges. It is not simply that Harvard is a wealthier institution. Harvard also offers a different educational experience, stressing breadth of study and real-world applications of knowledge.

3.We can make mistakes at any age. Some mistakes we make are about money. But most mistakes are about people. "Did Jerry really care when I broke up with Helen" "When I got that great job, did Jerry really feel good about it, as a friend Or did he envy my luck" When we look back, doubts like these can make us feel bad. But when we look back, it's too late.
Why do we go wrong about our friends--or our enemies Sometimes what people say hides their real meaning. And if we don't really listen, we miss the feeling behind the words. Suppose someone tells you, "you're a lucky dog". Is he really on your side If he says, "You're a lucky guy" or "You're a lucky gal", that's being friendly. But "lucky dog" There's a bit of envy in those words. Maybe he doesn't see it himself. But bringing in the "dog" bit puts you down a little. What he may be saying is that he doesn't think you deserve your luck.
How can you tell the real meaning behind someone's words One way is to take a good look at the person talking. Do his words fit the way he looks Does what he says square with the tone of voice His posture (体态) The look in his eyes Stop and think. The minute you spend thinking about the real meaning of what people say to you may save another mistake.

1).From the questions in the first paragraph we can learn that the writer ______.
A. feels happy, thinking of how nice his friends were to him

B. feels he may not have "read" his friends' true feelings correctly

C. thinks it was a mistake to have broken up with his girl friend, Helen

D. is sorry that his friends let him down
满分:2分
2).In the second paragraph, the writer uses the example of "You're a lucky dog" to show that ______.
A.  the speaker of this sentence is just being friendly

B. this saying means the same as "You're a lucky guy" or "You're a lucky gal"

C. sometimes the words used by a speaker give a clue to the feeling behind the words

D. the word "dog" shouldn't be used to apply to people
满分:2分

A. avoid mistakes about money and friends

D. not to believe what he says
满分:2分

B. avoid any mistakes while talking with people who envy you

C. not lose real friends who say things that do not please you

D. be able to observe people as they are talking to you

满分:2分
4.Albert Einstein had a great effect on science and history, greater than what only a few other men have achieved. An American university president once commented that Einstein had created a new outlook, a new view of the universe. It may be some time before the average mind understands fully the identity of time and space and so on---but even ordinary men understand now that the universe is something larger than ever before.
By 1994 the young Einstein had gained world fame. He accepted the offer to become a professor at the Prussian Academy of Science in Berlin. He had few duties, little teaching and unlimited opportunities for study, but soon his peace and quiet were broken by the First World War. Einstein hated violence. The misery of war affected him deeply, and he sat unhappily in his office doing little. He lost interest in his research. Only when peace came in 1918 was he able to get back to work.
In the years following World War I honors were increasingly heaped on him. He became the head of the Kaiser Whihem Institute of Theoretical Physics. In 1921he won the Nobel Prize, and he was honored in Germany until the rise of Nazism when he was driven from Germany because he was a Jew.
