Part I Reading Comprehension
Passage 1
For ages, sailors have said that it is good luck to see dolphins swimming alongside boats. Their presence meant that land was near, which would be vital information if a boat and her crew were in danger. Some dolphins have even protected shipwrecked sailors from sharks. It is no wonder that these unique and fascinating creatures have long been known as our friends.
You may think dolphins are fish, but they are actually mammals. They are related to whales and porpoises, and they evolved around 10 million years ago. Dolphins breathe air, give birth to live young, and feed them milk. They are social animals, living together in groups ranging in size of up to 12.In places rich in food, many schools can combine together to form schools of up to 1,000 dolphins.
Dolphins are thought to be intelligent animals because of their playfulness, curiosity, and quick ability to learn. They seem to communicate with each other through a combination of squeaks, whistles, and clicks. While scientists don't know what they are going on about, it is thought that dolphins are telling each other that food is nearby, or warning each other of approaching danger. Dolphins use sonar to discover an object's size, shape, and location. By sending out a series of clicks and receiving the echo that bounces off the object, they can differentiate between a shark and a boat.
Unfortunately, dolphins have faced increasing danger in recent years. Fishermen in pursuit of profitable tuna may accidentally trap dolphins in their nets, killing them in the process. These intelligent mammals of the sea deserve our protection and respect.
1. Dolphins have been human's friends because of ____________.

Passage 2
The average family spends about one-sixth of its income on food. Because food is expensive, it is important to spend money wisely when you shop. Here are some hints to help you shop better.
Buy only the food that you need. There are several ways to avoid buying extra food. First, make a shopping list before you go to the store. Then when you are at the store, follow your list carefully. Furthermore, do not go shopping if you are hungry. When you are hungry, food looks very delicious and you want to buy more than you need. Finally, go shopping alone if you can. If you shop with young children, they often ask you to buy unnecessary food like candy.
When you have a selection, choose the least expensive brand of a product. There are three points to remember when you buy a can of tomatoes, for example. First, look at the advertisements in the newspaper to see if your supermarket is having a special on canned tomatoes. In addition, when you are in the store you should check the price per pound of tomatoes. Sometimes you save money if you buy the larger size can; sometimes, however, you do not. Remember that a grade A product or a more expensive product is not necessarily more healthful than a grade B or less expensive product. Grade A tomatoes may look better, but all canned tomatoes have the same nutrients.
Shoppers seem to have special difficulties when they buy fresh fruits and vegetables. There are several things to consider when buying fresh foods. Because fresh foods spoil if not used, you have to buy the correct amount for the number of people you are serving. Remember that a pound of peas in their pod is only two to three servings, but a pound of string beans is enough for six servings. In addition, plan to use fresh foods that are in season because fresh foods are generally less expensive when they are in season. Finally, choose fruits and vegetables that have a bright, fresh color. A good color is often a sign that the food has a lot of vitamins. Careful shoppers try to get as many nutrients as they can for each dollar.

6. The passage mainly tells us____________.
A. how to be a good housekeeper
B. how to get more nutrients with less money
C. how the average family should spend its money
D. how to spend money wisely on food
7. The disadvantage of going shopping when one is hungry is that____________.
  A. one will have a better appetite
  B. one will like delicious food more
  C. one will buy more food than one can eat
  D. one will buy unnecessary food like candy
8. If you are not sure which to choose because there are different brands of the same food, remember____________.
  A. to look for a discount on canned tomatoes
  B. to check the price per pound of tomatoes
  C. to buy the larger size to save money
  D. that the more expensive does not necessarily do more good to health
9. When one buys fresh fruits and vegetables, all the following should be avoided EXCEPT____________.
  A. paying more attention to nutrition than to price
  B. buying a larger amount of fruits and vegetables than necessary
  C. preferring fresh fruits and vegetables that are out of season
  D. choosing fruits and vegetables that do not look bright
10. According to the author, vegetables and fruits that are in season____________.
  A. are easy to spoil      B. are cheap and easily available
  C. have a bright, fresh color    D. have enough vitamins and nutrients
Passage 3
Our surroundings are being polluted faster than the nature and man's present efforts cannot prevent it. Time is bringing us more people, and more people will bring us more industry, more cars, larger cities, and growing use of man-made materials.
What can explain and solve this problem? The fact is that the pollution is caused by man — by his desire for a modern way of life. We make "increasing industrialization" our chief aim. So we are often ready to offer everything: clean air, pure water, good food, our health and the future of our children. There is a constant flow of people from the countryside into the cities, eager for the benefits of our modern society. But as our technological achievements have grown in the last twenty years, pollution has become a serious problem.
Is it time we stopped to ask ourselves where we are going and why? It makes one think of the story about the airline pilot who told his passengers over the loud-speaker: "I've some good news and some bad news. The good news is that we're making rapid progress at 530 miles per hour. The bad news is that we're lost and don't know where we're going." The sad fact is that this becomes a true story when we speak of our modern society.
11. Man cannot prevent the world from being polluted because____________.
  A. the pollution of the world is increasingly fast
  B. people use too many man-made materials
  C. we have more industry
  D. we are producing more cars, trucks and buses
12. People crowd into the cities for____________.
  A. they want very much to find well-paid jobs
  B. they are anxious to enjoy the achievements of our society
  C. they have become tired of their homeland
  D. they have a strong wish to become industrial workers
13. According to the passage, what does man value (看重) most among the following?
  A. Industry.   B. Health. C. Clean air. D. The future of the children.
14. The story about the airline pilot tells us that____________.
  A. man knows where the society is going
  B. people do not welcome the rapid development of modern society
  C. man can do little about the problem of pollution
  D. the writer is worried about the future of our society
15. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?
  A. With the development of technology, pollution has become a serious problem.
  B. Lower the speed of development to stop pollution.
  C. It's time we did something to reduce pollution.
  D. As industry is growing fast, pollution is the natural result.
Passage 4
In what now seems like the prehistoric times of computer history, the early postwar era, there was a quite widespread concern that computers would take over the world from man one day. Already today, less than forty years later, as computers are relieving us of more and more of the routine tasks in business and in our personal lives, we are faced with a less dramatic but also less foreseen problem. People tend to be over-trusting of computers and are reluctant to challenge their authority. Indeed, they behave as if they were hardly aware that wrong buttons may be pushed, or that a computer may simply malfunction.
Obviously, there would be no point in investing in a computer if you had to check all its answers, but people should also rely on their own internal computers and check the machine when they have the feeling that something has gone wrong. Questioning and routine double checks must continue to be as much a part of good business as they were in pre-computer days. Maybe each computer should come with the following warning: for all the help this computer may provide, it should not be seen as a substitute for fundamental thinking and reasoning skills.
16. What is the main purpose of this passage?
  A. To look back to the early days of computers.
  B. To explain what technical problems may occur with computers.
  C. To discourage unnecessary investment in computers.
  D. To warn against a mentally lazy attitude towards computers.
17. According to the passage, initial concerns about computers were that they might_____.

  C. take control        D. take over routine tasks
18. The passage recommends those dealing with computers to_____.
  A. be reasonably skeptical abort them    B. check all their answers
  C. substitute them for basic thinking   D. use them for business purposes only

  B. a person’s store of knowledge and the ability to process it
  C. the most up-to-date in-house computer a company can buy
  D. a computer from the post-war era which is very reliable
20. The passage suggests that the present-day problem with regard to computers is_____
  A. challenging   B. psychological  C. dramatic  D. malfunctioning
Passage 5
Water problem in the future will become more intense and more complex. Our increasing population will tremendously increase urban wasters, primarily sewage. On the other hand, increasing demands for water will decrease substantially the amount of water available for building wasters. Rapidly expanding industries which involve more and more complex chemical processes will produce larger volume of liquid wasters, and many of these will contain chemicals which are noxious. To feed our rapidly expanding population, agriculture will have to be intensified. This will involve ever-increasing quantities of agricultural chemicals. From this, it is apparent that drastic steps must be taken immediately to develop corrective measures for the pollution problem.
There are two ways by which this pollution problem can be dwindled. The first relates to the treatment of wastes to decrease their pollution hazard. This involves the processing of solid wasters “prior to” disposal and the treatment of liquid wasters, or effluents, to permit the reuse of the water or minimize pollution upon final disposal.
A second approach is to develop an economic use for all or a part of the wastes. Farm manure is spread in fields as a nutrient or organic supplement. Effluents from sewage disposal plants are used in some areas both for irrigation and for the nutrients contained. Effluents from other processing plants may also be used as a supplemental source of water. Many industries, such as meat and poultry processing plants, are currently converting former waste products into marketable byproducts. Other industries are exploring potential; economic uses for their waste products.
21. The purpose of this passage is _____.
A. to acquaint the reader with water pollution problems
B. to alert the reader the dwindling water supply
C. to explain industrial uses of water
D. to demonstrate various uses of water
22. Which of the following points is NOT included in the passage?

Passage 7
In the United States during 1992, any family of four with an annual cash income of less than $ 14, 335 (before taxes) was considered poor. The dollar amount was called the poverty line, an economic measuring rod devised in 1964. The line was set at three times the amount needed to provide the cheapest nutritionally balanced diet. The poverty line is adjusted annually for inflation.
While the poverty line in the United States was more than $ 14, 000, the average annual per-person income in Bangladesh was $ 200, in Ethiopia $ 130, in Haiti $340, and In Mali 4 265. Anyone in those nations with an income of $ 14, 000 would be considered wealthy. During the Great Depression in the United States, when half the population was considered poor, a family with an income at the 1992 poverty line could afford to buy a house, a car, clothing and food.
The reality of poverty varies with location and social and political conditions. Poverty basically means a lack of, or an insufficient amount of, the three primary physical needs--- food, clothing, and shelter. But for poverty to be recognized, it must exist alongside prosperity. Before the discovery of the New World, the American Indians would not have considered themselves poor, though they lived with only the bare necessities and a few handmade artifacts(人工制品).
The severity of poverty varies, depending on the economic vitality of the nation in which it occurs. In the modern industrialized societies of Western Europe, North America, and Japan, there are many government services provided to ease poverty --- including free medical care and subsidized housing. The homeless of New York City and Los Angeles can usually find some shelter and a mission offering free meals.
31. You would be considered poor in America if ____.
A.  You are out of a job.
B.  You earn less than three times the amount needed to provide the cheapest diet.
C.  You earn less than $ 14, 335 (before taxes) per year.
D.  The amount of money you earn is below the current poverty line.
32. The average annual cash income per person before taxes in the USA in 1992 was ____.
A. more than $ 14, 000  B. $200  C. $14,335  D. about $3,580
33. The purpose of the example of the American Indians given in the 3rd paragraph is to show that poverty is _.
A. absolute  B. non-existent  C. relative  D. never recognized
34. Free medical care and subsidized housing most probably exist in ___ to relieve the poor and the needy.
A. Bangladesh  B. Haiti    C. Canada  D. India
35. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?
A. From 1929 to 1933, 50% of the American population lived in poverty.
B. Where there is prosperity, there is poverty.
C. Poverty basically refers to a lack of clothing, housing and food.
D. Anyone with an annual income around the 1992 American poverty line would be considered wealthy.
