"Rebellion"wastheloadedpoliticalword.IttoocomesfromLatin(asdoesabout60percentofourwordpool),anditmeansarenewalofwar.IntheI4thcentury"rebellion"wasusedtoindicatearesistancetolawfulauthority.Thiscanyieldamusingresults.Whicheversidewoncalledthelosersrebels—they,thewinners,beingtherepositoriesofvirtueandmoregunpowder.Thismeaninglingerstoday.TheConfederatefightersarecalledrebels.SincetheNorthwonthatwar,itcanbedismissedasarebellionandnotcalledarevolution.Whoeverwinsthewarredefinesthelanguage.

Politically,"rebellion"wasstillthemorepotentword.CromwellsseizureofstatepowerinthemidI7thcenturycametobecalledtheGreatRebellionbecauseCharlesⅡfollowedCromwellintherestorationofmonarchy.Cromwelldidntcallhisownactionsrebellious.InI689whenWilliamandMarytookoverthethroneofEngland,theeventwastaggedtheGloriousRevolution."Revolution"isbenignhereandpoliticallyinferiorinintensityto"rebellion".

TheRussianRevolution,theChineseRevolution,theCubanRevolution—bynow"revolution"isthepowerfulword,not"rebellion.Inthelate1960sandearly1970syoungAmericansusedtheword"revolution"indiscriminately.True,theywantedpoliticalpower,theywereopposedtotyrantsandbelievedinanewpoliticalprinciple(oranoldone,dependingonyouroutlook)calledparticipatorydemocracy.However,thatperiodofunrest,withitsattendantcreativity,didnotproducearevolution.Thewordquicklybecamecorrupteduntilbythe80s"revolutionwasawordusedtosellrunningshoes.
