一、Nature of Description
Description is the art of rendering observations and impressions into words. The writer's subject may be people, places, things, scenes, ideas and even emotions and moods. A talented writer can make his description so vivid that he can recreate the subject he deals with for the reader. Figurative language abounds in descriptive writing. The most frequently used figures of speech are simile, metaphor, and personification. When used in a fresh way, they are able to enhance the effectiveness of description.
二、Guidelines for Effective Description Careful Word Choice
The right words bring a description to life. Try to include specific nouns and verbs that convey exact meanings, and choose modifiers for maximum impact.
Sensory details
Use immediate details of description and relate them to a sensory response --- sight, sound, taste, touch, or smell.
Figures of speech
Figurative comparisons force our minds to create images in order to evaluate similarities either explicitly or implicitly. The most popular figures of speech are simile, metaphor and personification.
三、Theme in description
Like all sound writing, description also offers a thesis or main idea concerning its subject. The writer must be aware of what tone he wishes to create through his description, whether it is ironic or nosta1gic or sympathetic, etc. In short, description makes a point.
