Americansthis year will swallow 15, 000 tons of aspirin, one of the safest and mosteffective drugs invented by man. As the most popular medicine in the worldtoday, it is an effective pain reliever. Its bad effects are relatively mild, and it is cheap.

Althoughaspirin was first sold by a German company in 1899, it has been around muchlonger than that. Hippocrates, in ancient Greece, understood the medical valueof the leaves and tree bark which today are known to contain salicylates, thechemical in aspirin. During the 19th century there was a great deal ofexperimentation in Europe with this chemical, and it led to the introduction ofaspirin. By 19l5, aspirin tablets(片剂)were available in the United States.

Formillions of people suffering from arthritis, aspirin is the only thing thatworks. A small quantity of aspirin (two five-grain tablets) relieves pain andinflammation. It also reduces fever by interfering with some of the body'sreactions. Aspirin, in short, is truly the 20th-century wonder drug. On theother hand, it is also the second largest suicide drug and is the leading causeof poisoning among children. It has side effects that, although relativelymild, are largely unrecognized among users.

Aspirinis very irritating to the stomach lining, and many aspirin takers complainabout upset stomach. There is a right way and a wrong way to take aspirin. Passage 3

Packaging is a very important form ofadvertising. A package can sometimes motivate people to buy products. Forexample, a little child might ask for a breakfast food contained in a box witha picture of a TV character. The child is more interested in the picture thanin breakfast food. Pictures for children to color or cut out, games printed ona package, or a small gift inside a box also motivate many children to buyproducts - or to ask their parents to buy for them.
Some packages suggest that a buyer will getsomething for nothing. Food products sold in reusable containers are examplesof this. Although a similar product in plain container might cost less, peopleoften prefer to buy the product in a reusable glass or dish, because theybelieve the container is free. However, the cost of the container is added to thecost of the product.
The size of a package also motivates a buyer.Maybe the package has “Economy Size” or “Family Size” printed on it. Thissuggests that the larger size has the most product for the least money. Butthat is not always true. To find it out, a buyer has to know how the product issold and the price of the basic unit.
The information on the package should providesome answers. But the important thing for any buyer to remember is that apackage is often an advertisement. The words and pictures do not tell the wholestory. Only the product inside can do that.

  B. The quality of a container has nothing to dowith the quality of the product.
  C. The best choice for a buyer is to buy aproduct in a plain package.
  D. A buyer should buy what he needs most ratherthan a well-designed package.
