Part 1. Read the following paragraphs and choose an adequate topic sentence for each of them. Write the number of your choices on the Answer Sheet. (10 points)
Paragraph 1
No matter how kind and loving adults may be, children often suffer from illogical fears which are the result of an inability to understand the world around them. Nothing can equal the fear a child may feel in the dark, the absolute horror of childish nightmares. But the most painful part of childhood is the period when you begin to emerge from it: adolescence. Teenagers may rebel violently against parental authority, but this causes them great unhappiness. There is a complete lack of self-confidence during this time. Adolescents are over-conscious of their appearance and the impression they make on others. They feel shy, awkward and clumsy. Feelings are intense and hearts easily broken. Teenagers experience moments of black despair. And through this turmoil, adults seem to be more hostile than ever.
Children and teenagers are too ignorant.
Childhood is a period of troubles.
Children are tortured by a lack of self-confidence.
Parents should care their children with more love and understanding.

Paragraph 2
The sentences in most well-written paragraphs may be analyzed into four general functions. First, there are paragraph introducers, which are sentences that establish the topic focus of the paragraph as a whole. Second, there are paragraph developers, which present examples or details of various kinds that support the ideas set forth by the paragraph introducers. Third, there are viewpoint or context modulators, which are sentences that provide a smooth transition between different sets of ideas. Fourth, there are paragraph terminators, which logically conclude the ideas discussed in the paragraph in a psychologically satisfying manner. Not all pieces of writing will conform to this analysis; however, most successful paragraphs usually contain some combination of these four sentence types.
Paragraph development needs well-written sentences of four functions.
Sentences of four functions should be put into different places of paragraphs.
Paragraph introducers are more significant than the other three types of sentences.
Different sets of ideas have to be connected by different means of sentences.
Part 2. Read the following paragraphs to identify the sentence which is not related to its topic. Write the number of the unrelated sentences on the Answer Sheet. (10 points)
Paragraph 1
Movies are popular because people are great watchers. They like to watch other peoples’ lives. By going to movies, we can escape our own lives, share other emotions, and imagine ourselves as someone else. Many of our lives are not as adventurous or glamorous as the lives in movies. (1) We do not battle evil all day long and then go back to our luxurious penthouse apartment. We just go to school, do our homework, et, talk to our friends, and sleep. We need a little excitement in our lives and we find excitement at the movies. Humans are very emotional people. (2) We all like to cry and laugh. Fortunately, there is not much to cry about in my life so I like to go to sad movies where my heart strings can be tugged. I also like to go to comedies so I can laugh. I tend to cry and laugh more in a dark movie theater than I do in broad daylight. (3) Now I am a student, but I know someday I will be a scientist or a politician or a famous model. (4) Last month in Chicago Airport, I came across with 2 Russian super models. When I go to the movies, I can see my role models. I see how they act, what they wear, how they talk. I can prepare myself for the day when I will be like them.

Paragraph 2
There was one thing I found rather strange on my first day at Monk's House. The bathroom was directly above the kitchen and when Mrs. Crane was bathing before breakfast, I could, through the thin floor, hear her whispering to herself, asking questions and giving herself the answers. (1) When Mr. Crane saw that I looked so surprised, he told me that Mrs. Crane always said the sentences out loud that she had written at night. (2) She wanted to know if they sounded right and the bath was a good place for trying them out. (3) Every morning, when we carried the breakfast trays to Mrs. Crane's room I noticed that she had always been working during the night. There were pencils and paper beside her bed so that when she woke up she could work, and sometimes it seemed as if she had got very little sleep. (4) As we all know, insufficient sleep in a long run could harm people’s health.

Part 3. Put the following group of sentences into correct order. Write the number of the reordered sentences on the Answer Sheet. (10 points)
Every semester we have the opportunity to evaluate our instructors, to judge their lectures, their interest in students' problems, methods of assigning work, and general ability to conduct a class. It is very difficult to evaluate their performance objectively.
Another irresponsible form of evaluation occurred when James rated his instructor excellent because the instructor is "easy", who gives few tests and only assigns one paper during the entire term.
Both Senta and Sam were not fairly evaluating the instructor. They were affected by the grades they were earning and were biased in their judgments.
Her friend Sam wrote a marvelous description of the same instructor because he received an A in the course.
For example, Senta recently wrote irresponsible remarks about her instructor because she was failing to pass the course.
On the other hand, James rated Professor Jones poor because he assigns text work daily, gives pre-test and post-test reviews, and packs his lectures with a lot of information.

Part 4. Composition writing (70 points)
Read the following statements in which three people talk about their patterns of time arrangement. Then write a composition of 200 words on My Pattern of Time Arrangement according to the Instructions below.

1. Pattie Kovars: “I admit that I am a night owl.” 　　Even if my whole family gets up very early, I always like to work at night. I find that’s my best time to get work done. I like night time because everything is calm and I can just write. I feel calmer and more focused at night. There is no pressure. When I read my papers in the morning, I' m always amazed how good they sound.
2. Brandi Baldasano: “I can make efficient use of my time.”　　I try to make use of all the small portions of time that I have available. I find that I can finish a lot in fifteen minutes, because I am able to concentrate for that long knowing I have only a few minutes. Those small units of time really add up over a week. Setting small goals seems to help me avoid feeling overwhelmed. I use my calendar as a guide, by putting down what school work I would like to finish each day.
3. Galo Arboleda: “I have the ability to deal with high pressure.”　　I like to do everything at the last minute, and I really pay the price by being nervous and anxious. I always tell myself to stop this pattern, but then once again, I stay all night writing the paper or studying for the test. I try to deal with it by at least starting the assignment early, doing at least a quarter or even half of it, so I don’t have to do it all the night before. Usually I do end up doing it all but I always manage to get an A or B. I guess I work well under pressure.

Instructions: As we have noticed that some people play a better role in their work or life partly due to their efficient time arrangement. What is your style of time management? Do you always find it workable or problematic? Start your writing with the thesis statement (主题句) about your pattern of time arrangement. Then offer details or examples about how it works and/or how well it works. (Don’t copy any of the three sample paragraphs above.)
