Text B
Many visitors find the fast pace at which American people move very troubling. One’s first impression is likely to be that everyone is in a rush. City people always appear to be hurrying to get where they are going and are very impatient if they are delayed even for a brief moment.
At first, this may seem unfriendly to you. But drivers will rush you; storekeepers will be in a hurry as they serve you; people will push past you as they walk along the street. You will miss smiles, brief conversations with people as you shop or dine away from home. Do not think that because Americans are in such a hurry they are unfriendly. Often, life is much slower outside the big cities, as is true in other countries as well.
Americans who live in cities such as New York, Chicago, or Los Angeles, often think that everyone is equally in a hurry to get things done; they expect others to “push back”, just as city people do in Tokyo, Singapore or Paris, for example. But when they discover that you are a stranger, most Americans become quite kindly and will take great care to help you. Many of them first came to the city as strangers and they remember how frightening a new city can be. If you need help or want to ask a question, choose a friendly looking person and say, “I am a stranger here. Can you help me?”
Most people will stop, smile at you, and help you find you way or answer your questions. But you must let them know that you need help. Otherwise they are likely to pass you by, not noticing that you are new to the city and in need of help. Occasionally, you may find someone too busy or perhaps too rushed to give you aid. If this happens, do not be discouraged; just ask someone else. Most Americans enjoy helping a stranger.

16.        Many people who first visit the United States will find that _______.
        A. America is a highly developed country
        B. Americans are impatient and unfriendly people
        C. the fast pace in American life often causes much trouble
        D. American city people seem to be always in a rush
17.        When the author says “You will miss smile”, he means ___________.
        A. you will fail to notice that Americans are pleasant and happy
        B. you will be puzzled why Americans do not smile at you
        C. you will feel that Americans do not seem very friendly
        D. you will find that Americans don’t have much sense of humor
18.        In the author’s opinion, ___________.
        A. it is true that life in New York is much faster than that in any other city
        B. people living outside big cities are lazy and miserable
        C. those who are busy are not necessarily unfriendly
        D. most American people enjoy living in the suburbs of big cities
19.        The author mentions big cities such as Tokyo, Singapore and Paris ___________.
        A. to show that city people all over the world have a lot in common
        B. to let his readers be aware that they are some of the world’s biggest cities
        C. to illustrate their difference from American cities
        D. because they are some of the cities that attract visitors most
20.        If you say to an American that you are a stranger there, most probably he will _________.
A. stop smiling at you                                                        B. offer his help
C. help you find the way                                                        D. reply that he is pleased to meet you

Text C
Until late in the 20th century, most Americans spent time with people of different generations. Now middle-aged Americans may not keep in touch with old people until they are old themselves.
That’s because we group people by age. We put our three-year-olds together in day-care centers, our 13-year-olds in schools and sports activities, and our 80-year-olds in senior-citizen homes. Why?
We live away from the old for many reasons. Young people sometimes avoid the old to get rid of fears of aging and dying. It is much harder to watch someone we love disappear before our eyes. Sometimes it’s so hard that we stay away from the people who need us the most. Fortunately, some of us have found our way to the old. And we have discovered that they often save the young.
A reporter moved her family onto a block filled with old people. At first her children were disappointed. But the reporter baked banana bread for the neighbours and had her children deliver it and visit. Soon the  children had many new friends, with whom they shared food, stories and projects. “My children have never been less lonely,” the reporter said.
The young, in turn, save the old. Once I was in a rest home (养老院) when a visitor showed up with a baby, she was immediately surrounded. People who hadn’t gotten out of bed in a week suddenly were ringing for a wheelchair. Even those who had seemed asleep woke up to watch the child. Babies have an astonishing power to comfort and cure.
Grandparents are a special case. They give their grandchildren a feeling of security (安全) and continuity. As my husband put it, “My grandparents gave me a deep sense that things would turn out right in the end.” Grandchildren speak of attention they don’t get from worried parents. “My parents were always telling me to hurry up, and my grandparents told me to slow down,” one friend said. A teacher told me she can tell which pupils have relationships with grandparents: they are quieter, calmer and more trusting.

21.        Now in an American family, people can find that _______.
        A. children never live with their parents
B. aged people are supported by their grandchildren
        C. not all working people live with their parents
        D. grandchildren are supported by their grandparents
22.        The reason that old people are left alone may be that _______.
        A. the old don’t like to live in a big family
        B. the young can’t get enough money to support the old
        C. the old are too weak to live with the young
        D. different generations have different lifestyles
23.        The fact the reporter told us shows that_______.
        A. old people are easy to get along with
        B. old people in America enjoy banana bread
        C. she had no time to take care of her children
        D. old people in America lead a hard life
24.        Seeing a baby, the old people got excited because _______.
        A. they had never seen a baby before
        B. the baby was clever and beautiful
        C. the baby’s mother would take care of them
        D. the baby brought them the image of life
25.        Why are some children quieter, calmer and more trusting?
        A. Because their worried parents ask them to act like that.
        B. Because they have relationships with their grandparents.
        C. Because they have nothing to worry about.
         D. Because their teachers ask them to act like that.

Text D
You’ve probably had the experience of having someone fall in love with you when you didn’t return the feeling. In such a case it’s hard to know what to do. You want to discourage your admirer. Yet you don’t want to be so obvious in your efforts that you make an enemy of him.
A friend of mine had this problem and handled it in the most tactful way I’ve ever seen. Instead of telling the young man that she found it tiresome to have him around so much, she devoted herself to introducing him to every girl she knew. Whenever she had a date with him, she arranged for them to drop in at the home of one of her girl friends. A few weeks was all it took for him to click with one of these girls, and then everyone was happy. The new girl and the young man got along just fine and both of them were grateful for having brought them together. My friend was rid of a problem and she still had the young man as a friend, which was just what she wanted him to be.
Of course this solution may not work for you. You may have your own way of dealing with the problem. But whatever you decide to do, keep one thing in mind — the boy in question has feelings every bit as sensitive as your own. So try to find a way of discouraging him without hurting him.
