福师《英语写作》FAQ(一)
一、What is writing
Writing is a visual expression of ideas, it is oral language translated into a more permanent and at times a more structured form. Writing is a way of making thoughts and speech stand still and it is thought and ideas in visual code.
Writing is the process of taking an idea from inside of one's head and putting it into a code so that it can be shared with others.
二、Differences Between Speaking and Writing
1)Although the same message spoken and written may seem very similar, they are very different in nature. The most obvious difference is that the message is transmitted through different channels. The written message is visual while spoken message is oral/aural. A spoken message is articulated through speech organs. Most of the time the speaker can repeat or reword his message if it needs to be clarified.
2)Another difference between speaking and writing is that speaking is a personal interaction while writing is more often than not impersonal. When a person is speaking, his personality plays a role to a much greater extent than the writer's personality does in his writing. In addition, there is a greater sense of reality in the spoken message than in the written message. When we learn our native language, we first learn to listen, then to speak, then to read and finally to write. Writing is the final skill to be acquired. It is also the most difficult of the four skills. Similarly when one learns a foreign language, although it is not necessarily the last skill to be learned, writing is dependent upon the ability to listen, speak, read and think.
三、The importance of reading
Conventionally, the writing course used to dwell on the directions or guidance at theoretical level with very few practical examples, something like those “dry directions”in swimming lessons with little practice in the water. As the purpose of this course is to enhance the students' writing abilities, more emphasis is laid upon the reading of some choice writings.
Unlike reading for information in extensive reading course, or perusing for entertainment in intensive reading course, reading for writing purpose is of different sort. Through appreciating the model texts, the students become more aware of the logical and balanced structures and clever wording. Consciously or unconsciously, the students will soon grow out of the unhealthy writing habits. In addition, when getting used to the idiomatic writing expressions in English, the students will also iron out the writing mistakes without paying special attention to those errors under the influence of the writing habits in native language.
